It is rather a theological concept used to describe God’s relation to the world or human beings’ relation to God as in the Old Testament (cf. Genesis 15:6; Psalms 7:10; 11:7; Isa 41:8 etc.). The righteousness of God is the basis of its theological understanding. Nevertheless, the NT writings show diverse theological understandings of righteousness. Paul emphasizes righteousness given to human beings as a gift of God who is willing to forgive their sins (Romans 1:17; 3:21-31; 9:30-32), while the aspect of fulfilling the holy will of God is stressed in Matthew and James as in early Judaism (Matthew 3:15; 5:20; 6:1; James 2:21, 24).
