A parable is a short metaphorical story which compares one thing to another. Jesus employed the figure of speech for the sake of better understanding on the side of his audience (cf. 4:33-34). The parables of Jesus prompt his audience to reach a new understanding of the reality of the rule of God. Though most parables in the Gospels are derived from the historical Jesus, some of them were composed in the early church.
